When syncing your workbook and report, you may encounter situations where you need to either update the linked workbook file reference or relink a broken connection. This guide provides clear steps to address both scenarios effectively.

Changing the Workbook file linked to the Report
If you need your report to reference a different workbook file, follow these steps to update the link:
- Open your Report
- Select Linked Files in the Valcre Ribbon.
- Find the current linked file and hover over it. (DO NOT SELECT UNLINK. Unless you intend to permanently remove all connections to the workbook file, do not use the Unlink File option. Once unlinked, this operation cannot be reversed.)
- Select Change File
- Browse your files and select the new workbook you want the report to reference moving forward.
- Confirm the selection to establish the new link.
- Select Update All to update the report with the new workbook information
This ensures that your Report is now updated to pull data from the newly selected Workbook file.
Relink a Broken Workbook and Report Connection
If the link between your Report and Workbook becomes broken, you can relink it by following these steps:
- Open the Report where the link needs to be fixed.
- Select Linked Files from the Valcre Ribbon
- Identify the broken link from the list displayed.
- Select Change File to browse for and select the correct Workbook file.
- Ensure the file you select contains the accurate data or chart range you want to use.
- Select Update All to update all links within the report, or highlight specific links you need updated and select Update Selected.
This process restores functionality by reconnecting the Report to the appropriate Workbook file, ensuring data accuracy and consistency.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
If things still don't work, try these fast checks
- File not found/broken path: Ensure workbook and report are stored in the same folder. Verify the workbook wasn't moved/renamed. Use Change File to point to a new location.
- Permissions issue: Ensure you have read and write access to the workbook (e.g., network drive, SharePoint, OneDrive permissions).
- File locked or in use: Close the source workbook (or ask whoever has it open to close it) and retry.
- Named ranges or charts changed: Confirm the named range or chart referenced in the report still exists and includes the intended data.
- Different file format: If the new file is a different format (e.g., xls, vs.xlsx confirm compatibility)
- Network latency/sync delays: For cloud storage (OneDrive/SharePoint), ensure the file is fully synced locally before relinking.
